Music Should Feel Good

Music Should Feel Good

When you take music lessons, it's true you've got some hard work cut out for you. Oftentimes we start lessons hoping to "just have fun" and play the songs we love. Instead we find out that our fingers aren't used to coordinating with all the notes and keys. That our rhythm is so much different than the rhythm of the popular songs we want to play. Or we find that frustration is the only feeling we seem to get, day after day, trying to learn a new skill.

Emotions can bubble up when you learn to play an instrument and you can be surprised by confronting feelings you didn't even know you had! It's my belief that piano can become something so much more than just a study or a discipline. It can be something that counsels us, that helps us face the parts of ourselves we don't necessarily like. The parts of ourselves that make mistakes, fail, show up inadequately, embarrass ourselves, hold us back.

If you study piano, rest assured you will reach a phase where you don't want to try anymore, where you don't like it, or maybe you don't even like yourself or your teacher. You'll wonder why you started, and if it's worth it to quit. You'll know people who tell you they regret quitting, and plenty of people who remember trying and hating piano lessons.

One thing I hope for you, is that if you study music, you will, at some point, feel good. You will hit it out of the park on that song you've been dying to play. You will have a day where you get to record your tunes on an electronic piano and hear your own music play back at you and your eyes will light up when you realize that's your own unique individual soul sharing music and YOU DID IT!

If you love music, don't give up!
